CES Wrap-up Part 1

Well CES is done and over and this year had a few nice finds.  I will highlight them over the next few posts.  This year was predominantly about efficiency and getting more from your mobile devices.  This year the market will see a flood of new headphones.  You will see new offerings in the over the ear type headphones as well as traditional in ear offerings.  Whatever you are looking for, it will be available this year.  Although my favorite from the show was the offering from Voxlinc.  A pair of headphones that use vibration to deliver the sound instead of traditional headphones.  The sound was absolutely amazing and still being able to hear others around you is pretty awesome.  The Aftershokz retail for about 60.00 and use military special ops technology.  With a lifetime warranty these are an item i will definitely be picking up.

CES and TV's

Today we really got to go into the giltz and glamour of CES.  CES is a spectacle that really has to be seen to believe but below is just the entrance into the Central Hall where all the big boys had there booths.

Well CES this year were all about the TVs and 3D TVs at that.  The technology has made leaps and bounds in the past few years and is definitely becoming more attractive.  Panasonic really outdid themselves with there booth.  The 3D plasmas, highlighted by the 155 inch plasma as the centerpiece as a breathtaking site.  On top of that they announced that they will be broadcasting the 2012 Olympics from London in 3D.  The demos they showed really make it something to look forward to.  No longer just a gimmick it transports you right into the event with a front row seat that no one else could deliver.

Despite how absolutely amazing Panasonics offering is, the real show stealer was LG.  With there new 55 inch OLED 3D tv (due out this year), they took 3D to a whole new level.  With the most crisp 3D in the market the depth of colors was absolutely amazing.  And to top it all off the TV is a whopping 4 millimeters thick (1/6 of an inch).  I personally saw a demo of flying butterflies that made the room appear to be filled with butterflies.  Completely immersed in the experience.  It left me walking away with a simple 'WOW'

But back to Panasonic they did have a new offering that will make your tv so much more than just a way to watch your favorite soap opera.  With complete Skype integration and a wide angle camera lens you can chat with your family right from the comfort of your couch.  Also it integrate with the Android and iOS devices to stream media and share your photos with a flick of the finger.  With a fully functional demo it was extremely impressive and a technology that I am looking forward to working with.

CES Day 2

Today at CES we got to see many TV Manufactures and Mobile Phone technology

One of my favorite things so far at this show, other then the Optrix that Jon wrote about yesterday, is the new Samsung Galaxy Note.  Have you ever found yourself doing something on your mobile phone and wished you had brought your iPad or Android tablet along?  The Galaxy Note is the answer!

The Galaxy Note is the perfect compromise of size and functionality.  It's a 5.3"Android Phone / Tablet.  It's screen is plenty big to view web pages and comfortably view content even with the onscreen keyboard up, while still small enough to fit in your pocket.  It really is a great mix of Tablet and Phone with a lot of potential.

To further up the ante, the Samsung Galaxy Note comes with a stylus called the "S Pen".  This isn't any ordinary stylus.  It's precision is amazing.  To further prove the point, Samsung and AT&T have a group of artists at the show making very impressive caricatures with them!

We attempted to be volunteer subjects for the artists, but we were not the only kids on the block that thought this was cool.  The line was over 50 people, so we had to move on and keep looking for that next great technology to bring to you.

CES Day 1

Well hundreds of thousands of industry insiders have descended upon Vegas for the Annual Consumer Electronics Show.  I can definitely understand why the event lasts for four days.  The sheer size of the event boggles the mind.  And it all goes off without a hitch so my hats off to the organizers for putting together such a spectacle.

Now for the good part.  With Day 1 in the books I absolutely saw some cool new technologies coming to the market.  While the first day of the show for me was packed with more headphones than you could shake 5000 iPods at, there were some gems that we found in our journey.  The amount of development that is coming to market for iPhone and iPad apps is indescribable.  Every other vendor had something to offer.  With that said one of my favorites came from across the pond.

Freedom Input UK has brought out a new foldable keyboard that functions with android devices (tablets and phones), iPads and even Blackberry.  The device folds in half to about 6" x 4".  Boasting up to 90 hours of battery life, running off two AA batteries it lets you connect to any of your devices and seamlessly use it as your keyboard on any of the devices mentioned.  Its even small enough to fit in your back pocket so it makes it's extremely portable and since it works on so many devices you can move it from device to device as necessary.

Another great device turns your iPhone or iPod Tough into a personal action sports camera.  The device is a lot like the GoPro Hero without the expensive camera.  And the best part the app that comes with the mount will give you real time telemetry and overlay the video, showing you speed, lateral G forces and even track maps with breadcrumb trails.

Besides headphones and cases for your wireless device, home automation is making huge leaps forward.  Many of the offerings are on par with each other with little to set them apart.  Some of them boast video calling to your iPad or iPhone with video of intrusion detection while others offer extremely slick interfaces.  All of them allow you to control almost every aspect of your home right from your mobile device.

Finally my pick so far of the conference day 1 has got to be a nifty little wireless router that we saw.  Unfortunately its from a new tech company and I don't have the actual name of the device but with a built in LCD touch screen.  It would allow quick deployment into conference rooms and meeting rooms as necessary and even has the ability for a 2nd guest SSID.  And all that for a price point of under 80.00.

Anyway thats it from Day 1.  Stay tuned for updates from Day 2.

CES 2012 is Almost here!

If the first floor of your hotel looks like a casino, You might be in Vegas.

Well there's no doubt that were in Vegas on the Eve of CES 2012!

6 Tips for your new iPad or iPhone

The iPad and iPhone have dominated the Smartphone and Tablet markets for some time now. While they are both easy to use, here are a few tips that Apple probably didn’t tell you:

Taking a Screenshot – Do you have a problem with an application, or just want to keep a record of that bill you paid online from your iPad?  Take a screenshot by pressing the Power button (at the Top Right of you iPad or iPhone) and the round Home button.  The screen will flash acknowledging that a screenshot was taken.  The screen shot will be automatically saved to you Photo Gallery

Shortcuts to typing long words – Have a long email address that you struggle to type?  Perhaps a website you go to often?  You can create shortcuts for those difficult to type words.  For example, I have a shortcut created so that when I type “batn” (Brad at Nextstep), my phone will type my email address.

To setup a shortcut, goto “Settings à General à Keyboard” and click Add New Shortcut at the bottom of the screen.

Group icons together for a more organized homescreen – Many of us love to download apps.  After a while, the list of apps gets confusing and cluttered.   There’s a way to fix that!

Group multiple apps together by holding down on an app until all the apps shake on the screen.  Now drag one app over another app that you would like to group together.  This will create a new Group on your homescreen and you can then give it a custom name for the group.  Press the round Home button when you are done.

Using Siri to remind you when you arrive  (iPhone 4S only) – The iPhone 4S came with an amazing new feature.  Siri.  Siri will allow you to speak requests to the phone as well as will read responses back to you.

One of my favorite uses for this is reminders.  It’s difficult and dangerous to write reminders while you are driving.  Let Siri remind you when you arrive!

You must first set your Home and Work addresses in your contact for this to work.  Once those are set, you can tell Siri things like “When I get home, remind me to take out the trash”.  Siri then creates the reminder and monitors your GPS.  When you arrive at your home address, the screen will pop up with your reminder!

You can also say  “When I leave here, remind me to...” and it will alert you when you get about 50 feet from your current location.

Texting and Driving the Safe way!  We certainly would not condone Texting and Driving, but if your going to do it anyway, keep your eyes on the road and let Siri do the typing!                                                                                                                                                                                                                          To have Siri create and send a text message to Someone, put the phone to your ear and wait for the beep. When it beeps, say "Text Jim Smith Ill be late to the meeting". Continue holding the phone to your ear and Siri will repeat the message back to you: Heres your message to Jim Smith. Ill be late to the meeting Should I sent it? Sell Siri to "Send it" and its done!
To have siri Read Text messages, say "Do I have any new messages from Jim Smith?" and Siri will let you know and offer to read it back to you!
For this functionality to work, you must use names that are already in your contacts and have a mobile number associated with the contact. At this time, Siri will not read email messages, only Text Messages.

Keeping Notes with Siri (iPhone 4S only) – Did you know you can have Siri create notes as well as Add to them?  This is an excellent feature for keeping track of your time or anything else you may usually jot down on a post-it note.

To Create a note: tell Siri  to Create a note and the name  “Create a Readling List Note”.  A new note will be created called “Reading List”

To add “Of mice and men” to the list, tell Siri “Add Of mice and men to my Reading list note”
